Otto's Free App Blocker

A free alternative to Unpluq

Unpluq sells a tag you tap to unlock your apps, and the tag does not work without a subscription. Counting both, the first year is around $105. The free tier gives you two apps on one schedule.

Unpluq's prices as listed on its own store in September 2026: the Tag is $26.50, and Premium is $30 for three months or $79 for twelve without the tag, $83 for twelve with it. The tag only works with Premium. An account is required. The free version blocks your two most distracting apps on one schedule.

Where Unpluq is the better buy

A physical key you can deliberately leave at home is a stronger barrier than any setting, and Unpluq backs it up with alternative challenges for when the tag is not with you. If you want the hardware idea and you want it to keep working when you have left the tag in your other coat, this is the more complete version of it.

Where Otto is the better fit

Two apps on one schedule is not enough to find out whether blocking works for you, and $105 in the first year is a lot to spend finding out. Otto gives you every app, every schedule, a daily budget and greyscale, for nothing, with no account.

This is one of fourteen paid app blockers compared side by side on the alternatives page. There is also a guide to cutting phone use covering the setup no app does for you.

Otto is free, on both stores

No paid tier, no trial that expires, no account. There is a tip jar in the settings and that is the whole business model.
